My son and I also finished rebuilding his set of IDF 40s so he is very excited.

Sorry for not keeping up! It's been busy and progress continues to be slow. I have been reworking the front fenders to eliminate rub, restoring all the bits that go inside the doors for the windows, and restoring the headlight buckets. Of course, the usual distractions, like changing a light bulb in my daughters car. The turns out you have to take the front of the car off to get the drivers headlight out.

As you know, I have been working with my daughter Viva and a team of girls from Gulf Coast High School, building a solar powered go kart. It has distracted me from my build but it has been a phenomenal experience watching this group of very motivated girls dig into the project and produce amazing results. It started with the girls petitioning the school board and Florida Gulf Coast University to get a second kart donated for the engineering department at GCHS. We are the first high school to have two teams although there are rumors of two more schools doubling up for next year. The two GCHS teams, Sun Connection and GEECS (Girls Entering Engineering Club) made an impression yesterday, taking 1st and 2nd in one race and 1st and 3rd in the other. Sun Connection brought home both 1st places and the overall champion award! All in all, our school made a very big splash!
Here is a teaser video I made while the girls work up a full presentation.
Next year will be even more fun as my son is joining the team!
I best get my little spider done and out of the way before spring!!

Most of Saturday spent on our final day getting ready for the race next weekend. We got the solar panels installed and tested a bigger drive gear. All is working well...
Today I managed to find a little time for my project after replacing the map sensor and some other tune up stuff on the Passat.
Most importantly, I found the guts to drive it down to the gas station and fill it up. It's the first time that there has been enough fuel in it to make the gauge actually registered anything. Nice to see it working!!
And of course, I tinkered with the throttle linkage and the idle a bit more so I could take it for a burn around the block. Sweet!

But it's all good stuff!
One daughter learning how to change the oil in her car.
One daughter wrapping up the solar go kart
And my son deep into rebuilding the IDFs for his 1971 spider.
It's all taking away from my project but it's all good fun with the kids!

My daughter is in the engineering club in her high school and I have been acting as an advisor to the solar go kart challenge she and a team of girls are involved with. The kart has been sharing space in my crowded garage for the past couple months, with me spending more time on it than the Fiat. It is a great project and the girls are really interested and involved! I'll update more on this after the race on April 2nd.

Always something new to learn!!
Now that the engine is back together and not blowing white smoke all around the neighborhood...
I have started working on getting the carbs balanced and tuned. Not finished but getting close.

I apologize for the lack of updates!
No, I have not lost the enthusiasm at all. It's just a constant battle of priorities.
I have managed, with lots of help from my 14 year old, gotten the engine out, disassembled, honed and cleaned very well this time. It's back in the car and running clean with the new rings seated nicely!
More recently, with the motor all good, I have been working through tuning the carbs, finishing the airbox etc.
Pictures are always good...
